Graduate Student Research and Creativity Awards

Sponsored annually by Florida State University's Office of Graduate Studies and Office of Research, this awards program is designed to recognize the superior contributions of six graduate students to research and creative endeavors. Recipients of the Graduate Student Research and Creativity Awards are recognized at both the Celebration of Graduate Student Excellence Ceremony and the Research Recognition Dinner held each Spring. Awards are made to students in three disciplinary categories: natural and physical sciences including mathematics and engineering (STEM); social and behavioral sciences (SBS); and the humanities and arts (AH). Information about the nomination and selection process is updated each year in October, with binders due January 31st.

Previous Research and Creativity Award Winners

Graduate Student Leadership Award

Sponsored annually by Florida State University’s Office of Graduate Studies and the Congress of Graduate Students this award recognizes outstanding graduate student leaders who are making a positive difference in their scholarly/creative, campus, and wider communities. Graduate students who exhibit strong leadership skills through such activities as peer mentoring, teaching, research, publishing, creative work, service, and/or participation in professional association activities are encouraged to apply. The person selected for the prestigious Leadership Award and his/her department is recognized at the Celebration of Graduate Student Excellence held each Spring. Information about the nomination and selection process is updated each year in November, with binders due in January 31st.

Instructions for the Leadership Award Application

Each applicant must provide the following to the FSU Office of Graduate Studies:

  1. A one-page personal essay that includes a rationale for receiving the leadership award
  2. A Curriculum Vitae
  3. A letter from the Departmental Chair, Faculty Advisor, or Graduate Coordinator supporting the student for the leadership award

Completed applications are due in the Office of Graduate Studies (408 Westcott), no later than January 31st.

Graduate Student Outstanding Teaching Associates Awards (OTAA)

Sponsored annually by the Florida State University Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of Graduate Studies this award recognizes excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. Graduate students are nominated by faculty and other students and to be considered they must submit teaching portfolios, which are evaluated for evidence of their instructional skills, course organization, accessibility and rapport with students. The persons selected for the Outstanding Teaching Awards are recognized at the Celebration of Graduate Student Excellence held each Spring. Outstanding Graduate Faculty Mentor Award

Sponsored annually by the Office of Graduate Studies this award honors faculty mentors whose dedication to graduate students and commitment to excellence in graduate education and mentoring have made a significant contribution to the quality of life and professional development of graduate students at Florida State University. Recipients shall have demonstrated outstanding advising and mentoring practices and an overall commitment to graduate education at Florida State University.

The selection committee will use, but are not limited to, the following criteria:

  • has an established record of mentoring and professional interactions with graduate students by encouraging student publication, external grant funding, conference presentations, and other professional development opportunities;
  • provides a supportive environment which facilitates the development of best performance and talents from graduate students;
  • cultivates the development from student to colleague;
  • acts as an advocate and advises graduate students in administrative, organizational, and professional matters;
  • attracts graduate students to FSU through active recruitment and academic/scholarly reputation;
  • serves as major professor and has a successful record of graduate student degree completion.

The faculty selected for the prestigious Faculty Mentoring Award are recognized at the Faculty Awards Ceremony held each Spring. Information about the nomination process (PDF Document) and selection process is updated each year in October, with binders due in February.
